Mozilla Firefox Released

Thursday May 31st, 2007

The Mozilla Corporation yesterday released Mozilla Firefox, which is expected to be the final release of the Firefox 1.5 line. Firefox fixes several security flaws, as detailed in the Firefox section of the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories page.

The Mozilla Developer News weblog has a post about Firefox, confirming that there are unlikely to be any further Firefox 1.5 releases and recommending that all users upgrade to Firefox 2. This is in line with the ReleaseRoadmap policy, which states that after a new major release (such as last October's Firefox 2), the previous release of Firefox (1.5 in this case) will be supported "for up to six months".

Support should have ended in April but the Mozilla Corporation extended the lifetime of Firefox 1.5 in order to put in place a mechanism to allow 1.5 users to upgrade to the latest Firefox 2 release. Within the next few weeks, users with the software update feature enabled (it's on by default) will be offered an upgrade to Firefox, which was also released yesterday.

Firefox can be downloaded from the older Firefox releases page and is currently being pushed to existing 1.5 users via the software update system. More details are available in the Firefox Release Notes.
